Commentary

A new addition to the Pioneer collection, and in the Preventor line, this novelty is a classical military inspired 3 hand watch with central seconds. The release is in two dial options of either black or blue. The watches are available in either a leather Bund style strap or with steel bracelet. Aesthetics is rather good, and is firmly in the flight watch genre, with clear arabic numeral markers and large hands for excellent legibility. The crown is also very large and easy to manipulate. Case size is a very wearable 39mm, and the case is water resistant to 150m.

The claim to fame, so to speak is in the new case material, which is known as HD12 steel. This is a special steel alloy, developed for high surface hardness and corrosion resistance.

The steel is rated to 1200 Vickers, similar to what Rado uses in their scratch resistant ceramic cases. The material should give the case scratch resistant properties several times harder to scratch than conventional 316L steel.

The release documentation is not specific, but we think the HD12 steel is only used on the case, and the optional steel bracelet is in regular steel, likely 316L.

The movement is based on the Sellita SW200, and is a standard workhorse movement found in watches at this price range. The movement is well proven to be reliable and reasonably accurate, and we feel it a good choice for the purpose. Hanhart also uses similar movements in their other watches.

The pricing remains at the usual modest levels that Hanhart has been addressing. At the EUR 1k or 1.2k for steel bracelet, the Preventor HD12 represents great value as an entry level watch in the do-it-all everyday/tool watch category.

Release Details

The new, everyday allrounder with scratch-resistant HD12 steel and timeless design.

After more than two years of intensive development, Hanhart proudly presents the new Preventor HD12 . With the introduction of the exclusive HD12 steel, the manufacturer from the Black Forest is setting a new benchmark in terms of the scratch resistance of its cases. As an extension of the popular PIONEER collection, the Preventor HD12 fulfils the desire for a 3-hand model with central seconds and a more compact diameter of 39 mm. The water resistance of 15 ATM and a screw-down crown make the new Hanhart watch the perfect everyday companion.

Developed for heavy use: HD12 steel

The new HD12 steel from Hanhart achieves an exceptional surface hardness without compromising the corrosion resistance of the stainless steel. This innovative material is being used for the first time in Hanhart’s company history for the case of the new Preventor HD12watch.

Hanhart combines two high-tech processes in the elaborate, multistage production of its HD12 cases to preserve the fine details in the appearance of the case in addition to optimum scratch resistance. As a result, the new Preventor HD12 not only has an extremely hard surface, but also brushed, matt and glossy surfaces.

In a first step, large quantities of carbon are diffused into the stainless steel in a surface hardening process. This creates a gradual transition from the hard surface to the soft core. This process offers an enormous advantage over a pure coating, as it prevents brittleness. A transparent hard coating (PVD) is then applied to provide additional protection.

With this process, the HD12 steel achieves an impressive surface hardness of up to 1200 HV (Vickers hardness), which makes the watch case many times more resistant to scratches. In contrast, conventional 316L steel has a surface hardness of around 220 HV.

Timeless Hanhart Design

The Preventor HD12™ impresses with its clearly designed dial, which is available in the colours dark blue and black. It has three central hands, with the second hand having a distinctive red tip that enables precise reading. The minute and second hands are curved at the end to avoid parallax errors. Both the numerals and the hands are coated with SuperLuminova® C1, which makes them glow in the dark and ensures optimum legibility at all times. The dial also bears the historic Hanhart logo to emphasise the historical background. The watch has a diameter of 39 mm, a height of 10.5 mm and is powered by the reliable Sellita SW200 automatic movement. The crown features the historical Hanhart ‘h’ and highlights the love of detail.

Outstanding comfort

Various strap options are available for the Preventor HD12™. Three versions are available made from high-quality calfskin, each with an Alcantara inner side for increased comfort. These leather straps are available in the colours black, dark brown and light brown and feature white stitching, no rivets and a classic pin buckle. For all those who value easy care, Hanhart also offers the watch with a robust steel bracelet, which is coated with a transparent hard material layer (PVD) and has a surface hardness of up to 1000 HV.
