Panerai celebrates the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli team with a new limited-edition model, representing the sporting spirit of the two brands and the opportunity to carry the thrilling sensation of competition on one’s wrist.
Panerai Luminor Chrono Luna Rossa PAM01303
Made in a limited edition, the Luminor Chrono Luna Rossa PAM01303 will be available in 1000 pieces.
The Case and Dial
The stainless steel case measures 44mm wide and 15.65mm thick. This is a pretty hefty watch in thickness and weight, taking into consideration that an automatic chronograph movement tends to require that extra depth. The case is mostly brushed with a contrasting polished bezel.
As part of the more sporty Luminor range, it also comes with Panerai’s Safety Lock crown protection device (protected by trademark). Sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating is used.
An extension of the Luminor line dedicated to measuring precision performance, the Luminor Chrono stands apart from traditional chronographs for its placement of the start, stop and reset pushers on the left, to preserve the iconic design conferred by the crown protecting bridge on the right.
The new watch features a deep blue sandwich dial features a tachymeter scale on the flange, designed to extend its use on land. Red and white details, Luna Rossa, enrich the dial.
The blue dial uses a satiné soleil finishing – otherwise known as the sunburst dial, and features Arabic numerals and indexes in white Super-LumiNova with green luminescence.
Waterproof up to 10 bar (more 100 meters), the Luminor Chrono Luna Rossa features two bi-material bracelets with a rubber structure which ensures quality and long durability, and a technical waterproof material on the surface, a solution that makes the Luna Rossa bracelets ideal for water sports activities.
The Movement
At the root of the model’s accuracy and precision, and its peculiar functions, lies the new self-winding P.9200 Calibre with chronograph function. It is an efficient, high-performance self-winding movement thanks to the 42-hour power reserve ensured by the energy stored within a single barrel.
Concluding thoughts
The watch is thematically well designed, with an instinctive reference to the Luna Rossa team. However, considering the thick steel case, the watch may wear more uncomfortable than a time-only counterpart in a carbotech case.
The thickness and weight of a the watch may be even more amplified in a high intensity sport situation such as sailing. That said, the Panerai Luminor Chrono Luna Rossa is still a good looking timepiece suitable for a leisurely yacht weekend trip for a wearer that doesn’t have to wrestle with the mast and sails or steer vigorously.
The watch is priced at US$9400.
